Taking Flight: Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration Opening Event

Introduction to BC Conifers (ONLINE)

Saturday, November 14 2020 10.00am - 11.30am

VanDusen Botanical Garden’s Sam Sivertz will introduce the basics of conifer identification, featuring BC native conifers. In this online lecture, learn key characteristics of the most common conifer families, and handy tips and tricks to recognize species seen around Vancouver in both urban and wild areas. Get a closer look at cones and needles under the (virtual) microscope and see their defining patterns and features. A Garden map will be provided to guide you to find these plants at VanDusen at your leisure (admission sold separately).

Garden Medicines (ONLINE)

Wednesday, November 18 2020 6:30pm - 7:45pm

Join a medicinal feature of VanDusen Botanical Garden to explore the abundant medicinal plants on site. Medical herbalist, Katolen Yardley, will focus on plants in VanDusen’s Canadian Medicinal Garden, BC Habitat Garden, and Canadian Heritage Garden. Discover common applications for these plants traditionally used for medicines, folklore, and a greater appreciation of the healing flora around us. A Garden map will be provided to guide you to find these plants at VanDusen at your leisure (admission sold separately).

Botany for Plant Identification (ONLINE)

Tuesday, November 24 2020 6:00pm- 7:30pm

Learn the basics of plant identification by learning about plant morphology and taxonomy. This online presentation by botanist Latifa Pelletier-Ahmde will build an understanding of plant structural variations in leaves, stems, roots, and flowers. An introduction to plant taxonomy will cover key classification categories including plant families and will emphasize pattern recognition skills. A Garden map will be provided to guide you to find highlighted plants in VanDusen Botanical Garden at your leisure (admission sold separately).
