Join us for an exciting two-part series on native plants and their benefits, led by Abigail Hyde from Satinflower Nurseries.
In the first session, explore the difference between native and invasive plants, understanding the crucial role of preserving native species. Abby will cover common plant families and identification tips and showcase local Vancouver Island species as ecocultural case studies, highlighting their resilience against seasonal changes.
The second session focuses on transforming properties, large or small, into native meadows, providing habitats for urban wildlife. Abby will guide you through grass removal, seeding and planting strategies, timing, expectations, and maintenance tips, equipping you with the tools to start your own meadow in areas like lawns, boulevards, and community gardens.
Discover the art of crafting baskets and trivets from invasive English ivy. In this hands-on experience, you will learn all the steps of collecting, preparing and weaving ivy.
Enjoy refreshments while you connect with fellow participants. You’ll leave with your very own completed ivy creation. No experience is necessary; all materials are provided.
The Vancouver Avian Research Centre (VARC) and the Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association (VBGA) present this five-session online Bird Identification Certificate Program.

You will graduate from this program with a list of equipment, resources, and actions you can take to protect and identify our beloved feathered friends and bring your birding skills to the next level.
Long-time VanDusen birding guide Jeremy Gordon is back on-site with this seasonal favourite! During this introductory level class, he will discuss the best birding resources, such as binoculars and field guides, share tips on identifying local & migratory birds, and highlight hot birding spots around Vancouver. Following a one-hour classroom presentation, Jeremy will take you for a walk to look for some of the 106 species of birds in the Garden.
The class is designed for aspiring and beginner bird watchers to help build a foundation of knowledge and gain confidence to get out and go birding this spring.
Springtime offers new opportunities for mushroom enthusiasts. With regular showers and warming soil, mushrooms show up with increasing frequency in both urban areas and forests alike.
This class is an excellent introduction to mushroom foraging. It includes the basics of how mushrooms work, why they are critical to healthy ecosystems, where to find them, the basics of identification, and some common poisonous species.
