Taking Flight: Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration Opening Event

Vancouver All British Field Meet Classic Car Show

Saturday, May 18 10.00am - 4.30pm

The Vancouver All British Field Meet (ABFM) returns to VanDusen Botanical Garden on May 18 for their annual British car show on the Great Lawn. Presented by Hagerty, expect to see nearly 500 cars in 62 different classes. The event will also feature live entertainment, food trucks, vendor booths, merchandise for sale, high tea options and more. event ticket is required to access the event area.

Introduction to Qigong

Monday, April 17 2023 - Monday, May 1 2023 11.00am - 12.00pm

Join Anita Wong of the YS Traditional Chinese Medicine & Martial Arts College for an introduction to Qigong. Qigong is a meditation in motion, and a simple but effective system to enhance overall health and fitness. This exercise incorporates breathing techniques with body movements and directs energy throughout the meridians.

Through this four-session course, you will relax the body and mind, strengthen bones, enhance balance, and improve blood circulation. This series is suited for beginners and experienced students, with easy-to-follow steps and deep relaxation. Class starts with Qigong practice, followed by some Taichi steps to close.

Storytelling and Hula at Bloedel Conservatory

Join Poh Tan in this two-session storytelling time to connect with plants at Bloedel Conservatory. In addition to being a scientist, Poh is also a hula dancer, and she learned with Kumu Josie de Baat from Halau Kia’i O Ka Hula. Join us to learn a few basic steps of hula and how hula can help tell meaningful stories about our environment.

Seed Collecting: Native Plants Series

Biodiversity thrives with native plants!

Join this monthly 5-session workshop presented by experienced members of the VanDusen Seed Collectors group.

Learn proper techniques for harvesting the seeds from native plants found throughout the Lower Mainland and how to grow a square-meter meadow habitat that will promote and support biodiversity in your neighbourhood. Native plants sustain native species of birds, pollinating insects, butterflies and other equally threatened urban wildlife.

May Forest Bathing

Come discover the regenerative power of body and mind in nature with Kristine Koster, certified Forest Therapy Guide. The Japanese tradition of Shinrin-Yoku, forest bathing, is the eco-antidote to modern-day stress. Kristine will lead you through a variety of gentle activities in the Garden, all designed to promote relaxation, wellness, and connection.

Learn how the practice of forest bathing boosts our immune system and supports healing. The walk concludes by sharing wildcrafted tea and treats in the Garden.

Growing Green and Fighting Invasive Plants (Online)

Ever wondered what plants live in your neighbourhood and local parks? How do you know which ones are invasive? After learning some basic plant identification skills, discover practical tips for preventing and managing invasive species. Grow your gardening knowledge to help you maintain a healthy garden while protecting the environment.

Tasha Murray is the Executive Director of the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver. She has been involved in conservation in the Pacific Northwest for over twenty years, working with land managers, professionals, volunteers and the public on invasive species projects.

Build your Own Bird House

Join us for this family-friendly, hands-on workshop. Workshop attendees will construct their very own chickadee nesting box to help support wild bird habitat in your own backyard. All materials (and safety equipment) are supplied.

Watercolour "Plein Air"

Thursday, May 18 2023

This “en plein air” watercolour series will take place out in the springtime garden, exploring close-ups and fine details, as well as loose landscapes. Experience working in the elements and feel how the drying time of paintings changes. At the beginning of each session, Susan will demonstrate some quick techniques using vibrant colours to create striking contrasts and textures in watercolour. Bring your questions and a keen eye, find a comfy spot in the garden and capture what you see.

All levels are welcome!

A Visit with O.W.L. (Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society)

Friday, May 19 2023 3.00pm - 4.00pm

This is your chance for a meet and greet with some of nature’s most beautiful birds, offered through the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (O.W.L). O.W.L specializes in the rescue and rehabilitation of injured and orphaned raptors from all over B.C.  Learn about how the birds find their way to O.W.L., how they are cared for, and eventually released back into nature. Participants will also meet the teaching birds up close.  Photo ops are available (no flash please).
